Frequently Asked Questions
Answer: Two out of three choose the single academic year path. Most of the remaining students have spread their work over a two-year period and when this is done, the degree's duration is comparable to that for the SM Degree. Answer: The level of effort is effectively identical. SM students complete a 24-unit thesis while MEng students prepare a 12-unit thesis. MEng students take one more 12-unit subject than SM students - so there is a thesis/subject unit exchange involved. The 12-unit thesis and project is what makes it possible for many MEng students to complete the degree program in a single academic year. But this requires taking the equivalent of four graduate subjects each semester instead of the SM mode that involve two graduate subjects each semester. Answer: Yes - the admissions criteria is the same for both degree Programs. So students can change their enrollment after starting if the new Program better suits their learning objectives and career plans. To date, both transfers have been affected. Answer: Yes - there is nothing that prevents this. The normal path for those planning doctoral studies takes advantage of the research character of he SM Program. Despite this, several MEng graduates have pursued and completed their PhD. Answer: Yes - there are several sources of funding available to MEng students but some sources may not be appropriate for MEng students selecting the single academic year option. The Aeronautics and Astronautics Department awards two MEng Program Fellowships each year and MEng students have secured Teaching and Research Assistantships. Still unsure if MEng is right for you?
