Practice-Oriented
Since
WWII, the engineering science era has resulted in research-oriented graduate
studies that typically prepare students for more advanced studies. Graduating
students who chose to work in industry, more often than not, found themselves
working as an apprentice to a practicing engineer to learn the practical
practices of engineering. For some time, during which resources were plentiful,
this mode of operating was accepted. Recently, however, global competitiveness
has increased. Successful products now must carefully balance both performance
and cost. This change in emphasis has resulted in companies demanding
that academia prepare students for the practice of engineering and in
so doing reduce the expense of the "on-the-job-training" that companies
have been absorbing in he past.
The MIT Aeronautics and
Astronautics MEng Program has been developed with the support of many
aerospace industry companies to address this need.
